Deities

Whatever happened to all those Classical gods and goddesses after those pesky mortals tossed them by the wayside? They didn’t just vanish, you know.

Goddesses of The Light such as Athena and Freya, continue waging a never-ending war against the Anubis-led Darkness as they vie for a portal controlling time and space. Not being one to trifle with such tedium, Apollo sips nectar and chases togas with his friend Bacchus, in the VIP section of Heaven’s hotel bar.

But life turns on a dime when Apollo finds himself trapped on modern-day Earth. A wonderful “New Earth” filled with electric guitars and street tacos and a morally flexible tour guide named Coyote. But Apollo soon learns he’s lost his powers and immortality and, to make matters worse, he’s being stalked to feed an ancient Sumerian demon who grows stronger each time it consumes a god’s essence.

When the war in Heaven takes an unexpected turn, more gods are exiled to Earth. They must overcome their mutual distrusts to acquire return tickets to Heaven – even if means saving humanity to do so.

I believe Deities channels my inner Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, and Christopher Moore. But, hey, you be the judge.

The author was able to convey the way the gods felt when they arrived at earth and realized mortals were not giving them the respect they deserved. When Anubis ends up in an insurance firm is priceless. Even better was Bacchus comparing wines at a party. The conversations were entertaining and, in many places, made me laugh out loud.

Praise & Reviews

When an eclectic mix of Gods find themselves stranded on earth without their powers, hilarious mayhem ensues. From sexual romps to attempted murder, Deities is a well-written novel with an exciting new twist. I have never read a book that brings so many different gods together. But this one does just that and does it well. I recommend this book and give it five stars.

‘Hilarious yet strangely informative’

As a mythology lover, it’s an enjoyable read. Stuart Clarke interweaves characters from Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Norse, Persian, Celtic & other mythologies that we know and love.
